How the pick-up works in Essaouira
Essaouira's medina is closed to cars, so no driver can reach a riad door inside the walls. We agree a meeting point when you book: usually Bab Marrakech, Bab Sbaa or the car park by the port, whichever is closest to where you are staying. Many riads send a porter with a cart for the luggage; if yours does not, the driver walks in to meet you. Hotels and villas outside the walls, in the new town or along the beach road, are picked up at the door.
The road back to Marrakech
The drive follows the N8 east through argan country before the landscape opens into the flat, dry plain of the Haouz. In the first half hour you will see the argan cooperatives run by women's associations, and sometimes goats climbing the trees, which is real even if the scene is often staged for photos. One stop is included on request, at a cooperative or for coffee in Chichaoua roughly halfway. There is no motorway and no toll on this route.
Arriving in Marrakech, the driver takes you to your address. For riads inside the Marrakech medina, where lanes are too narrow for cars, he stops at the nearest access point and walks you to the door or hands you to the riad's porter.
Coach, shared taxi or private car
There is no train from Essaouira. Supratours and CTM coaches are comfortable and cheap, and for one or two people with light bags they are a good choice. A private car makes sense with luggage, children, three or more travellers, a flight to catch, or an address far from the bus stations.
