Marrakech Airport to the City: Taxi, Bus and Private Transfer Compared

Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) sits about 6 km southwest of Jemaa el-Fna - a 15 to 20 minute drive in normal traffic. You have four realistic ways to cover it: the official taxi rank, the ALSA line 19 bus, a ride-hailing app, or a pre-booked private transfer. This guide gives you the real cost of each, what can go wrong, and how to reach a riad that no car can actually drive to.

RAK handled around 9.3 million passengers in 2024. The medina it serves has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985 and is largely car-free, which is the single fact that decides how any transfer into it actually ends.

How much does it cost to get from Marrakech airport to the city?

In one line: the ALSA line 19 bus costs 30 MAD per person, an official petit taxi is the cheapest door-to-door option but the fare varies with your destination and the time of day, and a pre-booked private transfer with us is €15 per vehicle for up to 3 passengers - fixed at the moment you book, with no deposit.

Why the taxi price you read online is never the same twice

Search this question and you will find five different answers. That is not because anyone is lying - the fare genuinely depends on the time of day, exactly where in the city you are going, whether the meter is used, and whether you agreed a price before getting in. A metered petit taxi on the airport-to-medina run is 70 to 100 MAD by day, though drivers at the rank frequently quote 150 to 200 MAD instead. A legitimate night tariff applies after 22:00.

Here is what does not change, whichever option you pick: agree the fare before the car moves. A petit taxi carries a maximum of three passengers by law, so a family of four cannot legally travel in one. A grand taxi takes up to six. And the night surcharge is not a tourist scam - it is the official rate.

This is the entire reason our prices are per vehicle and fixed at booking: there is nothing to negotiate at 01:00 with your luggage on the pavement.

The problem nobody warns you about: your riad

If you are staying in a riad inside the medina, no car can reach your door. The alleys are too narrow for a vehicle. Every driver - taxi or private transfer - stops at the nearest gate, and you walk the rest of the way with your luggage.

The difference is what happens next. At the taxi rank you are on your own from the gate onwards, often at night, in a street plan that defeats most map apps. When you book with us, tell us the riad name: we work out which gate is actually closest, drive you there, and where the riad sends a porter we wait until you have been met.

The ALSA bus, line 19

Line 19 is operated by ALSA and connects the airport with the city centre near Jemaa el-Fna for 30 MAD, running roughly every 20 to 30 minutes from early morning until late evening. It is by far the cheapest option and it is perfectly safe. Buy your ticket from the driver or at the airport counter.

It is the wrong choice if you are arriving after the last departure, if you have more than a cabin bag each, if you are travelling with small children, or if you are staying somewhere the route does not pass. Luggage space on board is limited, and the stop is not your front door.

Arriving late at night

The last bus goes, the rank thins out, and negotiating a fare at 01:00 after a four-hour flight is nobody's idea of a good arrival. This is the strongest single case for booking ahead: your driver tracks the flight, waits in arrivals with your name on a sign, and the price was agreed before you took off.

We operate 24 hours a day, every day, and we do not add a night surcharge. If your flight is delayed, the pick-up time moves automatically at no extra cost.

Travelling with children

Bring your own car seat or ask us for one when you book - there is no extra charge and we fit it before you arrive. Airport petit taxis do not carry child seats, and with a three-passenger legal limit a family of four cannot use one anyway. Our SUVs, vans and minibuses seat 5, 7 and 15.

How do I get from Marrakech airport to the city centre?

Three options: the number 19 bus at 30 MAD, which takes 25 to 40 minutes and stops beside Jemaa el-Fna; a petit taxi on the meter at 70 to 100 MAD; or a fixed-price private transfer from €15 per vehicle with a meet in arrivals. It is 6 km, 15 to 20 minutes by car.

How much is the bus from Marrakech airport?

30 MAD one way, or 50 MAD return valid for two weeks. It is ALSA route 19, running every 20 to 30 minutes from about 06:00 to 23:00.

Does the number 19 bus stop at Jemaa el-Fna?

Yes, that is its medina terminus, after a stop at Place du 16 Novembre in Gueliz. Allow 25 to 40 minutes depending on traffic.

Is the bus worth it from the airport?

If you are travelling light, in daylight, and your riad is near Jemaa el-Fna, yes - it is a good option and we say so. With suitcases, in a group, or after 23:00, saving 60 dirhams does not repay the hassle.

How much is a petit taxi from the airport?

On the meter, 70 to 100 MAD to the medina by day and roughly 50% more at night. In practice many drivers quote 150 to 200 MAD: agree the fare before you get in, or walk to the next taxi.

Is there Uber in Marrakech?

Uber exists but works badly here: long waits and card payment often fails in the app. Do not rely on it for an arrival.

Is there a train at Marrakech airport?

No. Marrakech airport has no station. Marrakech's railway station is in Gueliz, about 4 km from the airport.

Where exactly does the driver wait?

In the arrivals hall after customs, holding a sign with your name. Their direct number is sent to you the day before.

How long does it take to get out of the airport?

30 to 60 minutes from landing to the exit: border police, baggage, then customs. When several flights land together the police queue alone can take 45 minutes.

Do I need dirhams when I arrive?

Use the ATM in the arrivals hall rather than the exchange counter - the rate is noticeably better. Keep small notes for the first taxi and tips.

Can I pay the driver in euros?

Yes. We take euros, dollars, pounds and dirhams in cash, as well as card.
