Why every website quotes you a different taxi price
We checked seven sites that rank for this question on the same day. They do not agree - and that is the single most useful thing to know before you land, because it means no published number is a rate you can hold a driver to.
The spread has three causes: some sites quote the metered fare and others quote the flat airport rate; some include the night tariff in their range and others list it separately; and "the city centre" means Gueliz to one writer and a riad deep in the medina to another. None of them is necessarily lying.

What does not change, whatever you pay
- A petit taxi carries a maximum of three passengers by law. A family of four cannot use one.
- A grand taxi takes up to six.
- The night tariff after 22:00 is official. It is not a surcharge invented for tourists.
- Agree the fare before the car moves, or insist on the meter. Doing this after you are seated with your luggage in the boot never goes well.
- No taxi can drive into the medina alleys. You will be set down at the nearest gate and walk from there, whatever you paid.
- Only use the marked rank outside arrivals. Ignore anyone offering you a ride inside the terminal.

For one or two people travelling in daylight with light luggage, the rank can be cheaper. For three or more, for any arrival after 22:00, or for a riad inside the medina, a fixed-price transfer is usually both cheaper and calmer.

Is there a bus from Marrakech airport?
Yes, ALSA route 19 runs to the city for 30 MAD one way, or 50 MAD return valid two weeks, every 20 to 30 minutes from about 06:00 to 23:00. It stops at Place du 16 Novembre in Gueliz and then Jemaa el-Fna.
Why do drivers quote 200 dirhams?
Because many arriving travellers pay without questioning it. The meter exists and works: ask for it, or agree a price before getting in.
Do airport taxis use the meter?
Not always, and that is the heart of the problem. Insist on the meter, or fix the price before your luggage goes in the boot.
What is the difference between a petit taxi and a grand taxi?
The petit taxi is beige, takes up to three passengers and works within the city. The grand taxi is white, larger, and is mostly used for journeys outside Marrakech.
Is there a night surcharge?
Yes, around 50%, in principle between 20:00 and 06:00. That is legal and normal - unlike a tripled fare quoted with no meter running.

Is a private transfer more expensive than a taxi?

Should I tip the driver?
It is not required. 10 to 20 dirhams on a city run is appreciated if the service was good.
Do prices change by season?
Ours are fixed all year. Metered fares do not officially change either, but the pressure to negotiate rises sharply in July, August and December.

Per vehicle. A €15 transfer costs €15 whether one or three of you travel.
How do I avoid overpaying on arrival?
Three rules: insist on the meter, or agree the price before getting in, or pre-book a fixed price. The worst moment to negotiate is straight off a flight.
