Is Agafay a real desert?
It is a stone desert, not a sand one. Bare rolling hills, no dunes. People who arrive expecting the Sahara are disappointed; people who wanted a two-hour landscape rather than a two-day drive are not.
Is Agafay the same as the Sahara?
No, and it is worth being clear about it. The Sahara dunes at Merzouga are 560 km away and need three days. Agafay is 35 km away and needs an afternoon.
What is there to do in Agafay?
Camel and quad rides, sunset dinners at the desert camps, and simply the view back to the snow-capped Atlas. Most visitors come late afternoon and stay for sunset.
When is the best time to go?
Late afternoon into sunset. Midday in summer is brutal, there is no shade at all in Agafay.
Can we have dinner in Agafay?
Yes, several camps serve dinner with a sunset view. Book directly with the camp; we handle the transfer and the wait.
Do we need to stay overnight?
No, and most people do not. Agafay works as a half-day: leave Marrakech around 16:00 and be back by 21:00.
Is it good for families?
Yes for the landscape and the camel rides. Bring hats and more water than you think, there is no shade and no shops.
Can we combine Agafay with the Ourika valley?
Yes, and it is a good pairing: Ourika in the morning for green and water, Agafay in the late afternoon for the desert and sunset.
What should we wear?
Closed shoes, the ground is loose stone. A layer for after sunset, when it cools quickly even in summer.
Is there phone signal in Agafay?
Patchy. The camps have their own arrangements but do not count on data. Agree a meeting point and time with your driver before you walk off.
