Other popular routes
How far is Imlil from Marrakech?
65 km, about 90 minutes by road through Asni and up the Mizane valley.
How much is a transfer to Imlil?
€60 per vehicle, not per person. The driver waits in the village for as long as you want.
How do I get back from Imlil?
Your driver waits, so the return is included. Grand taxis also run down to Asni and on to Marrakech, but they leave only when full.
How high is Imlil?
1,740 m. Jebel Toubkal above it reaches 4,167 m, the highest mountain in North Africa.
Can I climb Toubkal in a day from Marrakech?
No. Toubkal is a two-day trek with a night at the refuge. Anyone selling it as a day trip is selling something else.
What walk can I do in a day?
From the village up to Sidi Chamharouch, a shrine at about 2,300 m - roughly two hours up and ninety minutes down on a clear mule track. No guide needed.
Do I need a guide in Imlil?
Not for Sidi Chamharouch. For anything higher, yes, and guides are easy to hire in the village at modest cost.
Is the road to Imlil difficult?
No. Unlike the Tizi n'Tichka, it is a steady climb rather than a chain of hairpins - worth knowing if anyone gets travel sick.
How much cooler is Imlil than Marrakech?
Around 10 °C in summer. In winter there is snow on the tracks above the village and crampons become sensible.
Is there snow in Imlil?
On the peaks well into May, and on the upper tracks from roughly December to March. The village itself rarely holds snow for long.
Can we hire mules?
Yes, in the village. Mules and muleteers are the traditional way to carry bags up, and the rate is agreed locally rather than through us.
Is Imlil good for a family day out?
Yes, if you keep to the lower paths. The village, the walnut terraces and a lunch by the river make an easy day with children.
