Marrakech → Tangier
Marrakech to Tangier is 580 km and about 6 hours by road on the A3 and A5 motorways. A private car costs €320 per vehicle - not per person - so for five people that is €64 each. Before you book anything, read the train section below: Morocco has Africa's only high-speed line and on this route it is genuinely competitive.

There is no direct train. ONCF runs the Al Boraq high-speed service on the Tangier–Casablanca section, so the rail route means changing at Casablanca; a private car goes straight through.
Take the train seriously on this one
This is the route where the train earns its place. Morocco runs Al Boraq, Africa's first high-speed service, between Casablanca and Tangier in about 2 hours 10 minutes. There is no direct Marrakech–Tangier service, so you take a standard train from Marrakech to Casablanca (roughly 3 hours) and change onto Al Boraq.
Door to door that lands around 5 hours 30 minutes to 6 hours including the change - the same as driving, for a fraction of the price. If you are one or two people travelling light between two city centres in daylight, the train is the better buy and we will say so.
The car wins when you are three or more, when you have real luggage, when you are travelling at an hour the trains do not run, when your address is nowhere near either station, or when you want to stop at Asilah or Larache on the way - which is the honest reason most of our passengers choose it.
Everything side by side
Nothing hidden, including the transfers the ticket price does not cover.
| Option | Cost | Door-to-door time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train (Marrakech→Casablanca + Al Boraq) | ~250–450 MAD + taxis | 5h30 – 6h + transfers | 1–2 people, daytime, city centres |
| CTM / long-distance coach | ~250–350 MAD | 10 – 12 h | Lowest budget, overnight travel |
| Private car (us) | €320 per vehicle | ~6 h, door to door | 3+ people, luggage, ferry timing, stops |
The drive itself
North on the A3 to Casablanca, then the A5 coastal motorway through Rabat, Kenitra and Larache to Tangier. Modern toll road the whole way. Around 6 hours of driving in normal conditions, more if we hit the Casablanca ring at rush hour.
Tolls run to roughly 250–300 MAD on this route and they are already in the price we quote. Two stops are included on a run this long - nobody should sit for six hours without stretching.
Asilah, Larache and the coast road
The last stretch runs beside the Atlantic. Asilah is a small whitewashed walled town about 45 minutes before Tangier, with painted medina walls and a genuinely lovely seafront - a 40-minute stop there is the single best thing you can add to this drive. Larache and the Roman ruins of Lixus sit an hour further back.
Tell us at booking if you want either. We do not charge extra for the stop, only for the extra time if it turns into a long one.

Carrying on to Spain, or to Chefchaouen
Many people on this road are heading for the Tangier Med ferry to Tarifa or Algeciras. That port is about 45 km east of the city - tell us if that is your destination rather than Tangier itself, because it is a different drop-off and we need to plan the timing around your sailing.
Others break the journey at Chefchaouen, which is about 110 km from Tangier. If that is you, going to Chefchaouen first and Tangier second usually makes more sense than the reverse.
