Marrakech to Chefchaouen is about 580 km and roughly 7 hours by road, north through Casablanca and Rabat then up into the Rif. A private car is €290 per vehicle. There is no train to Chefchaouen at all - but there is a cheap flight-plus-bus route most people never hear about, and on this journey it deserves a serious look.

The option almost nobody mentions: fly, then bus
Chefchaouen has no railway and no airport. The obvious options are a 7-hour drive or a very long bus. But there is a third: fly Marrakech to Tangier - around 50 minutes, and low-cost carriers sell returns for well under €50 - then take a CTM bus from Tangier to Chefchaouen, about 3 hours for roughly 50 MAD, with departures from around midday.
Total travel time is comparable to driving, and for one or two people the cost is dramatically lower. We are a car company telling you this because you will find out anyway, and you will trust the rest of this page more if we say it first.
The catch: it only works if the flight times line up with the two daily buses, and you are moving your luggage three times. Miss the last bus in Tangier and you are staying there.

The drive, and why it is 7 hours not 6
The route runs north on the A3 to Casablanca, the A5 to Rabat and Kenitra, then leaves the motorway for the road up to Chefchaouen through the Rif foothills. The last 100 km are the slow part - good road, but winding and climbing, and you do not hurry it.
Tolls come to roughly 150 MAD to Kenitra and are already in our price. On a 7-hour run we stop twice as standard, usually near Casablanca and again before the climb.
Doing it as one leg, or breaking it up
Seven hours in one day is a lot for a holiday. A good share of our passengers split it: Marrakech to Rabat one day, Rabat to Chefchaouen the next, with a night in the calmest of the imperial cities in between. It costs a little more in total and it turns a hard travel day into two easy ones.
Coming from or going on to Tangier is the other common pattern - Tangier is only about 110 km from Chefchaouen, so pairing them is far more efficient than treating each as a separate trip from Marrakech.
What you are going for
Chefchaouen is the blue town of the Rif: lime-washed lanes in every shade from powder to indigo, a small square below a kasbah, and a pace nothing like Marrakech. It is small - you can walk all of it in a morning - which is exactly why arriving with energy left matters more here than on most routes.
It sits at around 600 m, so it is cooler than the coast and noticeably cooler than Marrakech in summer. Spring and autumn are the best months; winter is quiet, green and often wet.
